Old Rag Mountian is known as the most popular hike within the Shenandoah National Park. Old Rag is located off of VSR 231, a Virginia scenic byway between Madison and Sperryville. Route 231 is frequently cited as one of the most beautiful byways in the U.S. The small town near the base of Old Rag is Etlan. Etlan is a crossroads on 231 with a general store and antiques shop.
There is a valley to the east of 231 that runs from Hwy 29 to just north of Etlan. The southern part of the valley, south of VSR 609, is known as Hebron Valley. North of 609, along 603, the valley is known as Hidden Valley. The mountains to the west of Hidden Valley are Dulaney Mountain and Yowell Mountain. To the east is Mitchell Mountian.

To best view the valley, take 643 east from the Etlan intersection on 231. At the stop sign, take a right on 603 and continue for approximately 4 miles to 609. At 609, you can take a left to return to Hwy 29 in Culpeper County, or you can take a right to return to 231. Unlike 231, there is very little traffic on 603, likely under 100 cars per day.
